Dental Hygiene

Elderly woman in dentist chair smiling at dentistTo keep your teeth and gums healthy, Dr Mark Chung (Dentist) recommends booking a hygiene appointment every six months. People with braces or who are recovering from gum disease may need to visit more frequently.

During your checkup, we’ll examine your bite to make sure that everything is on track and that there aren’t any new developments since your last visit.

Before we get started, Dr Chung and our hygienists will review your medical history to see if any special accommodations need to be made. Some conditions may impact your dental health, so be sure to let us know if you’re taking any medications, supplements or have recently been treated by a doctor.

Keeping You Comfortable During a Cleaning

Some people have more sensitive teeth and gums than others. To help you feel as comfortable as possible during your hygiene visit, we will use a numbing cream to desensitise the areas around your teeth. There are no needles and it starts working in just 30 seconds.

If you’re extra sensitive, we can numb your mouth with local anaesthetic or turn the happy gas on to help you relax. Our hygienists will adapt your cleaning and the instruments we use to minimise any potential discomfort.

Will I Need X-Rays?

We occasionally utilise digital X-rays to help screen for conditions that cannot be seen during a visual exam. In most cases, we will take a full mouth series or film every two years. These intermittent X-rays make it easier to monitor changes in your dental health and provide a baseline for future exams.

Anything suspicious, such as bone loss, periodontal disease or a potential cavity will be X-rayed to arrange the best treatment for the problem. Our digital equipment reduces the amount of radiation and eliminates harmful chemicals from our practice. They’re safer for our patients, our team and the environment!

Planning for Your Visit

Most hygiene appointments take just over a half hour to complete. If for any reason we need to take more time or work at a slower pace, you can be booked for a follow-up visit. We’ve been told several times that our cleans are some of the most thorough that our patients have ever experienced!

A typical hygiene visit and our preventative services are usually covered by your insurance, but a gap may apply.

The Importance of Regular Cleanings

Even if you brush and floss regularly, there are parts of your mouth that brushing and flossing may not reach. For instance, deep between teeth in the curved surfaces of your tooth. During a professional dental cleaning, we can lift away soft plaque and calcified tartar that’s accumulated since your last checkup.

Scheduling regular cleans can help you reduce your risk of gum disease, bone loss, halitosis and tooth mobility.
