Sleep apnea is a condition that means patients when they sleep often cannot breathe and have to jerk themselves awake to breathe again. Typical symptoms are constant fatigue and tiredness, depression, lack of concentration, depression. Snoring is sometimes but not always a warning sign as well. Many of these patients tend to be overweight, have increased neck girth, cracked worn teeth, often drink alcohol and have a decreased immune system. They often feel drowsy when driving or are a passenger in a car, fall asleep easily after lunch and at worst can experience microsleeps that can lead to car crashes. It also leads to a poorer quality of life and decreased lifespan.
Kids can have sleep apnea too but often have different symptoms to adults. Typically they are hyperactive, disobedient, are poor students who have poor memory and are often misdiagnosed with ADHD.
Sleep apnea is often undiagnosed as many dentists and doctors are not trained to look for the signs and symptoms. We have attended numerous courses on diagnosing and treating sleep apnea.
Usually we may ask a few questions that may indicate you have a problem and then ask you to complete a PSG or sleep study. From there we can determine how severe your problem is and then either treat you or liase with your GP to get you the best treatment.
If you have mild to moderate sleep apnea or your partner wants you to stop snoring so they can finally get a good nights sleep, then a somnomed may be the perfect solution for you. It is two piece nightguard that positions your jaw forward to open up your airway when you sleep. While it is not quite as effective as a CPAP machine (a pump that forces oxygen through your nose) many patients find it much more confortable and portable. Feel free to have chat to us if you think you suffer from sleep apnea or snoring and we'll see if this is the right solution for you.
