Some patients have full dentures which never seem to have enough grip, in fact the can be so loose that they often have to remove the dentures to eat with. This can occur when the bony support shrinks away. Sometimes a simple reline of the denture will help it stay in again. However if too much bone has been lost or there is not enough of a “ridge” in the bone, then the denture will never adequately grip in the mouth. This is usually more common in the lower jaw. A lot of patients with this situation are elderly and do not want an expensive or traumatic procedure to fix it.
Mini implants are the perfect solution to help these dentures grip in the mouth. The procedure can be completed in 1 session under local anaesthetic, often using the patients own dentures and the patient can leave the same day with much tighter feeling dentures. The procedure involves placing usually 4-6 titanium supports in the jaw and special sockets are placed in the patients denture. The titanium supports fit into the sockets helping to give the denture a much firmer grip.
